Artist Guy Vinson invited artist Donna Burris Stroop and I to sketch with him one day at  the Oakland Zoo.  It's expensive to park and to visit. It took Donna and I no time to decide that we wanted to return many times so we joined. Now all three of us are happy Oakland Zoo members who sketch there often.  Here are some of my sketches there in the past few months.

Several of these sketches were done in one of another of the 24 Traveling Sketchbooks making it from one artist to the next in the U.S. Since that means I no longer have them, I decided to get an Sennelier accordian-style sketchbook to fill with sketches from the zoo.  In case any of my artist friends want to know how to get one of those cool things -- click here.  Moleskine also has an accordian book.  They call it a Japanese Style.  It is not so good for watercolor.  The Sennelier is GREAT! The paper is thick enough that both sides are useable.

"Fruitvale Mona Lisa" I was sketching the background and this striking woman came and sat on the edge of the fountain pool.  She figured out that I was sketching her and didn't stay long.           Gandhi's birthday is October 2 every year.  Is it the beginning of the Season for Nonviolence? Jack London in bronze, 4 PM. We've created a subgroup on Facebook for Sketchbook Skolars who live in the San Francisco East Bay.  It's called East Bay Sketchers.  Our first outing was not the Lindsay Wildlife Museum but Jack London Square in Oakland.  It was a Sunday and probably the last gloriously sunny, warm day for several months. The Square on Sunday boasts a very large, lively Farmer's Market with live music. It was perfect for sketching people since there were so many of them.  We were 7 Sketchbook Skolars plus one friend who has been adopted in spite of never having taken one of the klasses.  The original triumvirate -- Aikya Param (moi) Patricia Robinson Dale Wolfe --were there, of course. We were joined by  (L to R) Lynn Cohen, Aikya Param, Dale Wolfe, Valerie Sauban. Priscilla Reid Lynn Cohen Margo Rivera-Weiss Pat Tong and Dale's friend, Valerie Sauban.
