Houses in Alameda, apparently, are what I keep drawing. I'm a slow artist, so the appeal may be that they don't move or walk away to do something more interesting than pose.

Last time I opened my old edition (1984) of Virginia and Lee McAlester's A Field Guide to American Houses. the cover photo surprised me.  It is a Queen Ann Victorian like one I sketched!

Sketchbook Skool logo designed by Jean-Christopher Defline It started, perhaps in April of 2014, the series of three courses--Beginning, Seeing and Storytelling--offered by Sketchbook Skool,  I read about the program in Danny Gregory's blog.   Danny Gregory must be one of the most beloved artists alive today.  That's what I think anyway. He began sketching after his wife was left paralyzed after an accident in the New York City subway.  He found that it helped him through that difficult time. Now he says it changed his life.  Through sketching he met other artists and traveled around the world. He has created numerous books filled not only with his own drawings as is Every Day Matters  but also with the work of the many artists he came to know and appreciate such as in An Illustrated Life (the first book of his that I purchased) and An Illustrated Journey, another book I'm happy to have on my shelf. "Fruitvale Mona Lisa" I was sketching the background and this striking woman came and sat on the edge of the fountain pool.  She figured out that I was sketching her and didn't stay long.           Gandhi's birthday is October 2 every year.  Is it the beginning of the Season for Nonviolence? Lynnette Carr-Sykes  The portrait of Lynnette Carr Sykes for her memory card   was the high point of my 2015 portraits and the most beloved portrait I did this past year.  It was not the only one I did, however. Margo Rivera-Weiss done when East Bay Sketchers went to Jack London Square   Sally Bartholomew Man on Mobile Phone - Jack London Sqiare; from East Bay Sketchcrawl at Jack London Square Sandy Guderyon Boldly, I tried a group of people, a scarey prospect for me.  I only did two -- one from our Jack London Square Sketchcrawl and one at Oakland Zoo. Room mate Marilyn Flower encouraged me to apply for the Plein Aire Paintout put on late July/early August 2017 by Frank Bette Center for the Arts (1601 Paru, Alameda, CA).  I applied online. Hearing that hundreds of artists from all over the world applied in past years for me was like falling down a manhole! Marilyn remained confident.  She had been a member and volunteer for a while and had seen the quality of the art at the center. I was accepted. For the first time, I would be a Plein Aire Artist. It was thrilling! But wait!  I hadn't been doing any art.  I was in ministerial school! Oh my!  I'd better practice. Just in case I didn't have enough to do, I forced myself out to sketch and paint in Alameda as often as possible, usually only twice a week.  It seemed completely inadequate but as I worked the old art magic came back.  I live 15 to 20 minute drive from Frank Bette Gallery so it was easy for me to be a first time Worry Wort.
